Tradition: Family Weekend

Every fall, parents and families visit campus to get a firsthand look at the people, programs and places that have become home to their students. This year family weekend will be held on September 23-25, 2016! There are a variety of events including a BBQ Dinner on Friday night, a Home Football Game with a Tailgate Celebration on Saturday followed by a Tent Party, and a Jazz Brunch on Sunday. The Student Programming Board (ACE) also hosts Christy’s A Capella, an annual Family Weekend Tradition hosted in Rooke Chapel featuring Bucknell’s five premier A Capella Groups. Tradition: Office Hours

Office Hours are a unique component of how university students interact with their faculty. Unlike high school teachers, professors often teach in many locations, and they are often scheduled to be somewhere else directly before or after your class. Sometimes you can stop in early or stay late to chat with them, but sometimes they truly don’t have the time. So how do you ask questions or seek guidance? Office hours are your answer! Tradition: Christy Mathewson Gates

The Christy Mathewson Gates are an easy landmark as you arrive at the main entrance of campus.  They also signify your personal entrance into the university as you process through them on your first day after Matriculation.  Who was Christy Mathewson, and why do we have Gates named after him?  Check out this brief video for answers, and keep an eye out for a Mathewson quote stenciled on the wall in the fitness area at the KLARC.

Tradition: Matriculation

The word “matriculation” means simply “to enroll in a college or university as a candidate for a degree” (www.dictionary.com) At Bucknell, Matriculation is a ceremony held on the first day of New Student Orientation where you will be officially recognized as the newest class.  You have probably already noticed that we refer to you as the Class of 2020.  You will always be referred to by your graduating year, and you will actually receive your class pin at Matriculation with “Class of 2020” printed on a representation of the Christy Mathewson Gates.
